FAQs

Why is TCU upgrading from Visa® to MasterCard®?

MasterCard® provides a number of additional features and benefits that we are excited to offer our members. Upgrading from Visa to MasterCard® will allow TCU to enrich the products and services we provide to our members.

How can I ensure I am receiving all of the benefits of my new Debit MasterCard®?

Please visit the card guide and benefits pages to review all of the benefits included with your new Debit MasterCard®.

Why is my debit card changing, but my TCU Home Equity & TCU Credit Cards are not?

TCU will only be upgrading debit cards at this time. All other cards will continue to operate under Visa®.

Do I have to switch from Visa to MasterCard®?

Yes, all Visa® Debit Cards will switch to Debit MasterCard®.

I've heard not all places accept MasterCard®. Am I going to have problems?

No, your new Debit MasterCard® is accepted at all the same places your Visa® Debit Card is accepted - worldwide. Please note: Dollar General and the Dollar Tree are the only merchants that have guidelines with MasterCard®: The transactions can only be run as Debit.

What do I need to do to start using my card?

Once you receive your new Debit MasterCard®, activate your Debit MasterCard®, discard your old Visa® Debit Card, and update merchants with recurring transfers. You are welcome to bring your Visa® Debit Card into any TCU location for secure disposal.

When will my Visa® Debit Card stop working?

Visa® Debit Cards will continue to work for 45 days after you activate your new Debit MasterCard®. This will allow time for you to contact all the merchants you have recurring debits with to provide them your updated card information.

What happens if I don't activate my new Debit MasterCard®?

A representative from TCU will call you to verify you received the new Debit MasterCard® and answer any questions you have about your new card and this transition.

What do I need to do if I set-up recurring transfers on my Visa® Debit Card?

Your new Debit MasterCard® will have a new number; therefore, recurring transactions will need to be updated with your new card number and expiration date to ensure continuous service.

If I forget to update one of the merchants I set-up recurring transfers with, what will happen?

If a merchant tries to run your Visa® Debit Card and we authorize it, then it tries to clear your account, TCU will recognize the transaction and will manually clear the transaction. If a merchant tries to run your Visa® Debit Card and we do not authorize the transaction because it is no longer valid, then the merchant should contact you and TCU will not charge for the decline.
